Boise Casade – Allowable Holes
Project Description
This 3D technical guide visualizes the proper field modification of Boise Cascade BCI® and AJS® Joists, demonstrating how to integrate plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems through the web without compromising structural integrity. It illustrates specific “no-fly zones” for installers, visually reinforcing critical rules such as avoiding cuts within 6 inches of bearing supports and the strict prohibition against cutting or notching the flanges.
The animation breaks down complex spacing and sizing logic into clear visual examples, covering everything from pre-perforated 1 ½” knockouts to large rectangular cuts for ductwork. It highlights specific code constraints, such as the requirement that hole spacing must be at least twice the dimension of the largest hole, and demonstrates how geometry affects capacity—showing how using rounded corners on rectangular cuts allows for openings up to 22 inches long compared to the standard 18-inch limit.
